Both anxiety and depression are symptoms of Parkinson's Disease. Did you know that only 2% of people with PD and depression see a mental health professional? For too long, there has been a stigma around mental illness and mental health care. However, mental health care IS health care. If you are physically struggling with high blood pressure or diabetes, you wouldn't hesitate to see a doctor. Don't hesitate to see a mental healthcare professional when you are emotionally struggling. Help is available. Talk to your doctor or visit www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists to find a professional near you.
If you need to talk, the 988 Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones. According to Psychology Today, since family caregiving became a widely studied topic in the early 1980s, most research has emphasized caregiving burden and the potential negative effects of caregiving stress on mental and physical health. Psychologists and others involved in clinical practice most often see caregivers who are seeking help because they are experiencing high levels of strain in the caregiving role, and these caregivers often report high levels of burden, stress and disruption of their own well-being and social activities.
The federal parity law of 2008 requires insurance companies to treat mental and behavioral health and substance use disorder coverage equal to (or better than) medical/surgical coverage. That means that insurers must treat financial requirements equally.
However, not all providers accept certain insurance companies including Medicare. Check the Psychology Today Find A Therapist link to search for a provider that accepts your insurance.
